　　伊芙（乔安娜·伍德沃德 Joanne Woodward 饰）是一名平凡的家庭主妇，长久以来，她一直饱受抑郁、失眠和头痛的折磨，整个人形容枯槁，憔悴异常。最终，伊芙决定求助于医学，她找到了心理医生卢瑟（李·科布 Lee J. Cobb 饰），希望借助于他的力量拯救自己于黑暗的泥潭之中。
刚开始，卢瑟只将伊芙当做一位普通的抑郁症患者，然而，随着时间的推移，卢瑟发现事情并不是他所想象的那么简单。卢瑟对伊芙使用了催眠，之后惊讶的发现，在伊芙的体内居住了另外两个人格，她们一个理智而独立，另一个则魅惑又放荡。在和这三个人格相处的过程中，卢瑟发现自己已经无法自拔。
